The City of Poznań is located in the Wielkopolskie Lake District. The limits of Poznań can be inscribed within a circle which is approximately 27 km in diameter. The distance from Poznań to Poland's eastern border is 454 km, to the western border 161 km and to the southern border 236 km. Poznań, together with Szczecin and Wrocław, are the largest Polish cities located closest to the German border. Poznań's location in relation to Berlin, one of the largest urban areas in Europe, is conducive to growing mutual relations between the cities, which in turn is significant for numerous aspects of Poznań's development.
The geographic and transport location of Poznań, both in relation to the European continent as well as Poland, gives the city an advantageous position. Transport routes leading from the east to west and from the north to south intersect in Poznań. Furthermore, Poznań is located on the route of one of the four pan-European transport corridors running through Poland belonging to the European network of land transportation. A well developed system of roads and railway lines in the Wielkopolskie province makes Poznań easy to access. The completion of the western section of the A2 motorway from Nowy Tomyśl to Świecko in 2012 will be of special significance. Poznań also has a regional airport which provides regular connections to many European cities.
Poznań covers an area of 261.8 km2 and is the 6th largest Polish city in terms of area (after Warsaw, Łódź, Krakow, Wrocław and Gdańsk).
