House No. 48Architectural research carried out 25 years ago at the rear of the house revealed the oldest brick structure in Poznań's Old Market Square. Dating from the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, it had a tower-like form reminiscent of ancient merchant houses in Western Europe. Its unique character supports the assumption that it might have belonged to a bailiff who represented a duke.
In the subsequent centuries the house was in the hands of many prominent citizens, including Kasper Goski, a physician and astrologist, who held the mayor's office for several terms. His prediction of Turkey's demise in the battle of Lepanto in 1571 made him famous throughout Europe.
The Baroque-style façade is from 1942 and the painted decorations from 1955.
