House no. 50, “Under the Canopy”

House No. 50The impoverished nobleman Jan Wyleżański, known as Reszka, lived here from 1510. Having married the merchant Tomasz Reszka's widow, he was given positions of prominence in the city government and amassed considerable fortune, which helped his sons regain noble status. The record of his children, which Wyleżański made in 1538, is the oldest family chronicle written in the Polish language. Also worth mentioning is his son-in-law and heir Stefan Mikan, a physician and humanist, who was held in high esteem, elected mayor and awarded the title of nobleman.
Legend has it that August II (August the Strong) once spent a night in the house - (another version mentions the Swedish king Charles the Twelfth). Having drunk too much, the monarch fell out of a first-floor window and landed on the canopy, which saved his life.
The plaque to the left of the entrance shows the water level during the great flood that hit Poznań in 1736.
