Professor Rodrigo Uprimny Yepes was born on 13 April 1959 in Bogotá (Colombia). He is a Colombian lawyer specialized in constitutional law and human rights. He is currently a member of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of the United Nations.
He graduated from the Externado University of Colombia and received a PhD degree in political economics from the University of Picardie in Amiens (France), he also holds a MA degree in sociology of law from the University Paris II.
He is a professor in constitutional law, human rights and state theory at the Faculty of Law of the National University of Colombia in Bogotá.
He was a visiting professor to other Colombian and foreign universities. In the years 1994-2004, he was a judge of the Constitutional Tribunal of Colombia and an expert of the Inter-American Court on Human Rights.
Member and founder of the Centre of Studies on Law, Justice and Society (Dejusticia). Director of the Centre since 2005.
Member of the International Commission of Jurists.
Visiting professor to the American University (Washington, USA), the University of Grenoble (France) and the University of Utrecht (Holland).
Director of the Certificate Programme on Constitutional Law at the Faculty of Law of the National University of Colombia in the years 1998-2005. Director of the Master's Programme on Law at the National University of Colombia in the years 2005-2008.
Advocate specialized in human rights, lawyer and scientist in the field of human rights in the Colombian Commission of Jurists (1989-1993).
Consultant in the matters of violence, civic participation, conflict resolution and justice under the project of the United Nations Development Programme "National Plan of Rehabilitation" (PNR) - Colombia (1993).
He has authored numerous books and articles on human rights, constitutional law, tensions between law and economics, social rights, legal system and justice during the peace and democratic transformation (transitional justice).
In 2006 and 2013, he was distinguished with the Special Prize of the State University of Colombia for outstanding academic achievements, and with the Simón Bolívar National Prize for the best opinion in the field of journalism in 2013.
