The celebration of the 100th anniversary of Poznań University

This week four Poznań universitites - Adam Mickiewicz University, University of Medicine, University of Life Sciences and University School of Physical Education - have jointly inaugurated the new academic year. Thus they opened the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Poznań University. The ceremony was held in the hall of Adam Mickiewicz University (ul. Wieniawskiego). It was attended by the members of the academic community as well as the state and local authorities.

- Together we are stepping in the 100th academic year, referring to the year 1919, when University of the Piasts was established. All four Poznań universities come from it - said Professor Lesicki, the chancellor of Adam Mickiewicz University. The residents has been dreaming of hosting a university since the 16th century and it could have come true after the First World War. That was year 1919. One year later the school was renamed as Poznań University - the chancellor mentioned.

As he emphasized there is also another reason to make the following year essential and breakthrough for the university.

It is a change in legal order that we function in. Today the new higher education and science law comes into force, which means that the challenges connected with implementing the new regulations. The challenges because we will be introducing them in the atmosphere of legal instability, undermining the authority of the courts and the Constitution as well as the fundamental democratic principle of division of power - said professor Andrzej Lesicki. As he added, the changing regulations are considered by the academic community a chance to develop the university.

The need for the development of Poznań universities and the role of the academic community was expressed by the Mayor of the city - Jacek Jaśkowiak.

We are living in the academic city and the higher institutions are our substantial capital. They are mainly supposed to guide the city, define its character and make it attractive. It would be difficult to imagine Poznań without the University of Poznań, consequently without Adam Mickiewicz University, University of Medicine, University of Life Sciences and University School of Physical Education - said Jacek Jaśkowiak. - Every resident, without exceptions, benefits from the original 100-year tradition. The tradition that we really take pride in. Many generations have educated here. Owing to firm preparation, with braveness and without any complexes they reach academic and professional peaks and shape Polish, European and even global reality. I would like to underline that we want to be your support. The development of higher education and the success of local universities are our business - the mayor addressed the celebrants.

The music performance was provided by the academic choirs. The inaugural lecture titled "100 years.Language dimension" was given by prof. Jerzy Bralczyk. During the ceremony, the rectors of the Poznan universities performed the matriculation of the first year students. The ceremony was attended by people who start learning in a new neuroscience course, taught by all four universities.
