ul. Półwiejska 32
The Stary Browar (the old brewery) Shopping, Arts and Business Center was opened in 2003 and was built on the site of the Browar Huggera (Hugger's brewery). Its beginnings date back to 1844 when a brewer from Württemberg, Ambrosius Hugger came to Poznań. Somewhere around 1876, his sons, Julius and Alfons, started creating the famous Browary Huggera. On the lot, at the intersection of Półwiejska and the street stretching from the Brama Wildecka along the city fortifications near Fort Grolman, the Hugger brothers built a brewery, a malt house and a drying plant with a characteristic chimney.
The turn of the 20th century was a time of economic boom for the company, and around the courtyard, an office building, a coopery and a new chimney were built. In 1918, the brewery produced almost 72,000 hectoliters of Kryształ beer - a lager beer done the Plzeň Region way, and Specjał - a dark ale from Munich. Somewhere around 1926, the brewery was taken over by Dr. Roman May's Chemical Concern, and just before the outbreak of the first war it was taken over by the Browar Związkowy Związku Restauratorów, whose partnership numbered 82 shareholders. In September 1939, the company came under the stewardship of the Germans and by 1944, production of beer had been resumed. At the end of the 1944, the German owners made bunkers and shelters out of the brewery's cellars and underground rooms. During the fighting for Poznań, the brewery was heavily destroyed. After the war, it was taken over by the Zakłady Piwowarskie (a brewing company). In 1980, the brewery was closed, and a carbonated water plant was run there for some time. The Hugger brewery's old buildings became part of a new complex, which in its majority was built from the beginning and situated on an extension of the old workshop. In the construction, genuine bricks from the turn of the 20th century were used. The building now also features a shopping mall and art gallery, where you can do your shopping and take part in numerous exhibitions and cultural events as well.
