Monument to Jan KochanowskiJan Kochanowski, the author of works including the beautiful Book of Psalms, served as preposite of Poznań Cathedral chapter. In 1885, on the 300th anniversary of the poet's death (d.1584), an obelisk designed by Antoni Krzyżanowski was unveiled on Cathedral Square with a medallion portrait of Kochanowski. In 1924 the monument was repositioned in front of the former presbytery. It was destroyed by the Germans during World War II and reconstructed in 1984 by Jerzy Sobociński. It was once again positioned in front of the presbytery, from where it was moved to the Lubrański Academy building in 2002.
It is likely that Kochanowski himself never set foot in Poznań and that he acted through proxies. The post of preposite was extremely lucrative and allowed him to work free from financial worry.
