House No. 84The plaque on the wall commemorates two owners who occupy a special place in the history of Poznań. The first one was Giovanni Battista di Quadro, constructor of the town hall, who built it for the merchant Jan Rgilowski but became its owner around 1555 for more than 25 years. The façade of the house features his sculpted image by Władysław Marcinkowski. Damaged during the war, it has recently been refurbished.
The sculpture was founded by Cyryl Ratajski, the owner of the house before World War II and mayor of the city between 1922 and 1934. Ratajski made his name as an excellent organiser and under his leadership Poznań flourished. He proved his dedication to the city when he reassumed office after the evacuation of Polish authorities in September 1939. The role he played in the development of the Polish underground state deserves special mention: from 1939 to 1942 he was the first delegate of the Government of the Polish Republic in Exile.
The building was restored to its mid-eighteenth century appearance after the war. It houses the Henryk Sienkiewicz Literary Museum founded by Ignacy Moś, a local merchant.
