Przemysł II was born in Poznań. He was the last male representative of the Greater Poland line of the Piast dynasty, the Duke of Poznań, then Greater Poland and Kraków, and in 1295-1296, the King of Poland. He is one of the most important figures in the history of Poznań and the region. The construction work began with archaeological research and were followed by the construction of the pedestal. The city announced an open, two-stage competition for the design of the monument in 2020. The design was required to reflect the historical context of the location site and to portray the king in a realistic manner, bearing the insignia of royal power and the elements of knightly craftsmanship from the late 13th and early 14th centuries. The monument will be built with respect for the existing greenery. The monument will be financed entirely by a private investor. The project is supervised by the Municipal Heritage Conservator. The monument will become part of the public space of the Old Town and will be a clear symbol of the historical significance of Przemysł II. The monument is scheduled to be completed and ceremonially unveiled in spring 2026.
