The Days of Paweł Edmund Strzelecki

Paweł Edmund Strzelecki is one of the most important historical figures in Polish exploration history. Born in Głuszyna near Poznań, he was the first Pole to travel around the world and visit all continents except Antarctica. In 1840, he reached and named Australia's highest mountain, Mount Kościuszko, in honor of the Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko.

Thanks to his dedication to social causes, Strzelecki played a vital role in helping impoverished children in Ireland during the Great Famine of the 1840s. His contributions to geographical studies and charity work continue to inspire generations to this day.

In 2023, the Polish Sejm and the Poznań City Council declared it the Year of Paweł Edmund Strzelecki, sparking increased interest in his legacy. As a result, Poznań City, the Raczyński Library, and Wydawnictwo Miejskie Posnania signed a letter of intent to preserve and promote the achievements of this extraordinary traveler.

The program includes the exhibition "Paweł Strzelecki on the Poster," which will be available from March 3rd in the Herbaciarnia of Raczyński Library. From March 7th to 9th, during the Book Fair at Poznań International Fair, there will be children's workshops titled "A Journey Through Paweł Edmund Strzelecki's Life." Then, on March 12th at 10:00 AM, a meeting titled "The Mountain Kościuszko" with Radosław Nawrot will take place at The Centre of Family Initiatives.

On March 15th, two themed walks, "In the Footsteps of Travelers in Poznań," will be held:

· 10:00 AM - for families with children (starting point: Stary Marych Monument)

· 12:00 PM - for youth and adults (starting point: Cyryl Ratajski's Square)

On March 22nd at 11:00 AM in Raczyński Library, there will be a meeting titled "Co hrabia porabia?" (related to the book What the Count is Up To?) with Łukasz Wierzbicki.

On March 25th at 12:00 PM, a memorial plaque of Paweł Edmund Strzelecki will be unveiled at Polonia's House in Poznań. Later that day, at 6:00 PM, a debate titled " (Un)known Paweł Edmund Strzelecki?" will take place at the Arts Branch of Raczyński Library.

Additionally, the Irish Culture Foundation will offer online lessons titled "Paweł Edmund Strzelecki - Traveler, Explorer, and Man with a Big Heart" until March 30th. You can sign up via email at fundacja@fki.home.pl. The foundation has also prepared other activities with the support of the Embassy of Ireland in Poland.
