House no. 37, The Red House
Watch galleries
House No. 37This owes its historical name to the colour of the façade. The width distinguishes it from the other buildings in the Old Market Square; it is much wider because it swallowed the adjoining house in the seventeenth century. The Red House was rebuilt in the years 1652-1654 by the Italian architect Tomaso Poncino, the first builder of the Jesuit Church (now the Parish Church).
The early Baroque façade has survived to the present day together with the portal and the remnants of some corbels which once supported a bay window. The arcade along Wielka Street, and also the arcades in Wodna Street and Paderewskiego Street, were created during the post-war renovation to make way for pedestrian traffic.
There has been a chemist's in the building since the 1650s and the Brittany House since 1993.
