Bambergian womanThe popular Bamberg woman statue was financed in 1915 by the Goldenring family of wine merchants. The statue was made by the Berlin sculptor Joseph Wackerle, whose model was Jadwiga Gadymska, a worker in the founders' company.
Designed as a public well, it commemorates the settlers from the area near the German town of Bamberg who came to Poznań in the early eighteenth century to populate the neighbouring villages decimated by wars and disease. Being Roman Catholics, they rapidly assimilated into the Polish society, though they never forgot their German origins. To this day women wearing traditional costumes are an inseparable part of any religious ceremony.
The Association of Poznań Bambergers established recently holds meetings for their friends and supporters in front of the Bamberg woman on the first Saturday of August to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the contract between the municipalities of Poznań and the settlers.
