House no. 59

House No. 59Mikołaj Dąbnicki, yet another physician and mayor, bought the house in 1521. He is known for his efforts to supply Poznań with fresh water, the lack of which brought frequent epidemics to the city.
Towards the end of the eighteenth century the house was repossessed and bought by the Żupański family, merchants of Greek origin. It was here, as the plaque outside informs, that the family's most prominent member, Jan Konstanty, was born in 1804. He was a bookseller and publisher and one of the most accomplished Polish editors; he published works by Adam Mickiewicz and Józef Ignacy Kraszewski and his books won great acclaim for their professional layout.
Rebuilt in the late eighteenth century style, it houses the Tourist Information Centre on the ground floor.
