The Proserpine Fountain
Watch galleries
FountainsIn the Middle Ages there were already public wells in the corners of the market square, which were subsequently decorated with statues. The oldest mention of the wells is from 1568, when wooden statues of a lion and a deer were commissioned to be placed in front of the Town Hall and House no. 54. In the following century, all four wells were decorated with wooden sculptures of Apollo, Jupiter, Mars and Neptune.
Only the Proserpine Fountain has survived to the present day in its historical form. The composition made by Augustyn Schöps in the years 1758-1766 shows the mythological scene of Proserpine being abducted by Pluto. The remaining three fountains have been placed in the square in recent years.
