Tak przed ponad dwustu pięćdziesięciu laty charakteryzował stolicę Wielkopolski ks. Benedykt Chmielowski, autor najstarszej polskiej encyklopedii. I choć dziś nie brakuje ani wyższych domów, ani obszerniejszych placów, to Stary Rynek wciąż pozostaje przedmiotem niekłamanej dumy poznaniaków i podziwu licznie odwiedzających go turystów.

Wytyczony w chwili lokacji Poznania w 1253 roku, stanowił przez wieki centrum życia miejskiego. Tu w ratuszu urzędowały władze, tu dokonywano stanowiących o pomyślności gospodarczej transakcji handlowych, tu mieszkali najznaczniejsi obywatele.

The Old Market Square Guide

"Poznań (...) with its tall houses and spacious market square has charm aplenty". These were the words Rev. Benedykt Chmielowski used over 250 years ago to describe the capital of Wielkopolska in the oldest Polish encyclopaedia. And though today there are taller buildings and larger open spaces in the city, the Old Market Square remains the source of great pride for Poznanians and an object of admiration for numerous visitors.

Marked out in 1253, when the city of Poznań was chartered, the market square has been the centre of community life for centuries. It was in the town hall that the city councils took decisions about local affairs. And it was in the market square that the most prominent citizens lived and trade deals were negotiated to bring economic prosperity to the city.

Posen (...) hat einen großen Reiz dank seyner hohen Bürgerhäuser und seynem geräumigen Marktplatz". So wurde die großpolnische Hauptstadt von Pater Benedykt Chmielowski, dem Autor der ältesten polnischen Enzyklopädie vor einem Vierteljahrtausend beschrieben. Heute sind zwar zahlreiche noch höhere Häuser und noch größere Plätze zu finden, doch bleibt der Alte Markt ein steter Grund zum echten Stolz der Posener und zur Bewunderung für Touristen, die ihn massenweise besuchen.

Abgesteckt zum Zeitpunkt der Stadtgründung im Jahre 1253, bildete der Marktplatz jahrhundertelang das städtische Lebenszentrum. Hier amtierte im Rathaus der Magistrat, an diesem Platz erfolgten die wichtigsten Geschäfte, die zum wirtschaftlichen Gedeihen des Ortes beitrugen, hier lebten die vornehmsten Bürger.
