The Euros without cigarettes
2011-10-21
UEFA EURO 2012™ will be free from smoke. It means that smoking as well as promoting and selling tobacco will be prohibited in all the stadiums during the championships.
UEFA made the decision on the smoking ban in the stadiums during the tournament in Poland and in the Ukraine together with the World Health Organisation, the World Heart Federation, the European Network of Healthy Stadiums, local organisational committees in Poland and Ukraine and local groups supporting healthy lifestyles. "EURO 2012 free from tobacco respects the health of our spectators and all persons involved in the tournament" said the president of UEFA, Michel Platini, in his interview for UEFA.com. "We want to maintain the highest health, safety and comfort standards at our key tournament and tobacco does not belong to them" he added.
Prohibition of smoking as well as promoting and selling cigarettes will be binding not only in the stands, but also in the whole stadium complex. Moreover, the European Commission, which is responsible for sport, would like the Fan Zone to be free from tobacco as well.
