The Summer School at the Biology Faculty of the Adam-Mickiewicz University

This year's edition of the School of Molecular Theoretical Biology at the Biology Faculty of the Adam-Mickiewicz University has just started. Between 1st and 17th August, participants from different countries will run projects under the eye of outstanding scientists in a given domain. The Summer School is international in nature - 82 high school students from European countries such as Belarus, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Croatia, Moldova, Russia and Poland, as well as a group of students from far corners of the world - Philippines and USA, participate therein. Professor Jacek Radwan, the head of the Evolutionary Biology Laboratory emphasises: The aim of the School is, above all, to involve students in scientific research carried out by experts from all around the world. Each participant freely chooses the team of specialists with whom he wants to cooperate. Moreover, the students may also acquire new competences during courses in the fields of literature or molecular biology - says Professor Radwan.

- We would like to check whether teaching different than in the classroom will be more efficient - in order to learn something, you should do it yourself. The participants acquire knowledge during laboratory sessions. It is called the "actual teaching' - said Professor Fiodor Kondrashova from the Institute of Science and Technology Austria.

The Summer School gathered about 100 tutors - scientists, academic employees, doctoral student and people responsible for the organization of the project. Lessons will be held by scientists i.a. from the Harvard University, the Adam Mickiewicz University, the University of Edinburgh or the Moscow State University.

The Molecular and Theoretical Biology School is sponsored by the Zimin Foundation and co-financed by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The previous two editions were held in Barcelona. This year the Adam Mickiewicz University became the partner of the School.
