Open lecture: "Scoliosis - a verdict or a challenge?"

The Faculty of Medicine at the Poznan University of Medical Sciences and the City of Poznań cordially invite you to an open lecture by Dr Theodoros B. Grivas titled "Scoliosis - is it a verdict or a challenge overcome?" The lecture will take place on 14 June 2025 at 10:00 a.m. in the J. Dr Theodoros B. Grivas

Dr Theodoros B. Grivas is a renowned orthopaedic surgeon and spine specialist. He graduated from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1978), located in Central Macedonia, Greece. After completing his specialisation in general surgery as well as paediatric and adult orthopaedics and traumatology in Greece, he obtained his MD degree. He later earned his PhD from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Dr Grivas gained international experience at the University Hospital, Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, and Harlow Wood Orthopaedic Hospital in Mansfield, UK, under the guidance of Mr J.K. Webb and Prof. R.G. Burwell. In Greece, he served at Evangelismos and Thriasio hospitals in Athens and was Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Thriasio Hospital for five years.

He is an active member of the Hellenic Association of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, as well as numerous other scientific societies. He is affiliated with the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), where he served as a Traveling Fellow. He has also chaired international organisations such as the IRSSD, SOSORT (of which he is a co-founder), and the Hellenic Spine Society.

Dr Grivas has led numerous research projects, particularly in the field of school scoliosis screening (SSS). He initiated a national screening programme and founded the National Training Centre for scoliosis screeners (www.schoolscreening.gr), which has been officially recognised and regulated by the Greek state. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, is the author and editor of nine books, and has contributed numerous articles indexed in Medline. He has also participated in research projects funded by national and European sources.

He played a key role in scientific publishing, serving as Editor-in-Chief of the open-access journal Scoliosis and Spinal Deformities published by BMC, and previously as Editor of Scoliosis. He is currently Associate Editor of Spine Deformity (the official journal of the SRS) and sits on the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed journals.

Between 2019 and 2020, he was a member of the National Examination Board for Orthopaedics and Traumatology, and in 2020-2021, he served on the Crisis and Qualification Council of Greece's National Health System, responsible for appointing orthopaedic surgeons in Piraeus and the Second Aegean Region. His department was also invited to host an orthopaedics and traumatology training programme on the Trialect platform.

Dr Grivas retired on 31 December 2021, concluding his tenure as Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Tzaneio General Hospital in Piraeus, where he served for 12 years. Over a 35-year career, he made a significant contribution to the Greek healthcare system as an orthopaedic and spine surgeon.

Currently, he is focused on establishing the Hellenic Scoliosis Foundation, continues his academic work, delivers lectures on scoliosis screening, and implements screening programmes across various municipalities in Attica. He has also coordinated similar initiatives internationally-in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, Egypt, Brazil, Chile, Indonesia, Turkey, Poland, and Italy-and has acted as an external examiner for doctoral theses in Oslo, Hong Kong, and South Africa.
