About 26 thousand offences are registered annually in Poznan, of these 85% are criminal offences. The predominant type of crime are thefts (almost 40%), of which half are motor vehicle thefts cars and car-part thefts. The overall crime detection rate is increasing, and the highest rate is noted in respect of: homicides (100%), drug-related crimes (99.1%), traffic (98.6%) and economic crimes (over 90%).

The actions of the police are supported by the Municipal Guard of Poznan, which focuses, most of all, on maintaining public order, the cleanliness and the aesthetic appearance of the city, ensuring the safety of children and teenagers, preventing violations of road traffic regulations, environmental protection, combating the negative effects of public order disturbance, as well as conducting control and prevention activities in schools, and community and socio-therapeutic centres. The Municipal Guard officers intervene over 80 thousand times per year, most often in the cases of incorrectly parked cars and breaches of public order.

In order to improve the residents' safety, the City of Poznan is implementing a "Municipal Programme for the Prevention of Crime and the Protection of Citizens' Safety and Public Order," under which it has conducted activities related to preventing juvenile demoralisation and crime, prevention and solving alcohol problems, social pathologies, threats in transport and road traffic as well as extraordinary hazards.

A CCTV system also functions in the city, which improves the chances to detect crimes and offences in progress. It covers 372 cameras, located in places considered dangerous, mainly at intersections with heavy traffic, flyovers, public transportation stops and along pedestrian routes.

The City of Poznan has a crisis management system which, in the event of crisis situations and natural catastrophes, enables it to coordinate emergency measures and provide the required logistic security through the Crisis Management Centre. The residents are also covered by an information system which through text messages can notify them of any situations hazardous to life or health and of the need to evacuate to designated areas of the city.
