The 6th District of Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is on the western part of the city, with a surface of 37 km2 and a population about 380.000 (June 1, 2002). The most of residents are between 14 and 54 y/o. There are 11.000 of unemployed and 96.000 pensioners.
Importance of the 6th District raises the location of some crucial institutions: Polytechnic Institute, Pasteur Institute, Emil Carafolli Institute and the Botanical Institute. We have about 70.000 students with the largest share of primary school. Some schools in the 6th District are: Polytechnic University of Bucharest, National Academy of Physical Education and Sport, Pentecostal Theological Institute, 27 schools, 2 special schools, 6 theoretical highschools, 5 school groups, 1 colleges and 2 children clubs.
In the 6th District the are a lot of cultural places: 3 cinemas, a theatre, two museums and five public libraries, subsidiaries of Bucharest Metropolitan Library. A number of publishers has their headquarters here. Moreover, there are 6 major hospitals, 3 clinics close to them, home for the elderly, 4 clinics and many pharmacies located in the 6th District.
Urban transport is provided by the urban transport society, covering the entire area of 6th District. Underground transport is carried out with two subway lines in the area of 6th District.
The General Direction for Social Care and Child Protection 6th District is a public institution of local interest which implements social measures aiming to prevent the risk situations and to protect under-privileged people (children in difficulty, families with problems, lonely people, elderly people, disabled people or other people in need). At the 6-th District level the institution unfolds activities in order to achieve social policies and prevention strategies as well as fighting against the social risk factors, informing citizens about their social rights, initiating and implementing social care programs and attracting public or private partners in different projects.
