Poznan Public Bike System returns

On Tuesday, March 1st Poznan Public Bike System - or Poznański Rower Miejski, or short PRM- will start its 11th season. This year users will have 8 more rental zones and additional 87 stationless bikes. Thanks to the location of the new 4th generation zones, the recreational function of the city bike will be strengthened. Users will be able to get to such places as Strzeszynek or Rusalka.

As in the previous season, PEKA cardholders with a valid season ticket will still be able to use the free 30 minutes of PRM travel to conveniently change from a bicycle to a bus or tram on ZTM lines. Users without a season ticket will pay a symbolic 1 PLN for the first 30 minutes of rental.

- We will once again expand the stationless bicycle system, which is much more flexible and user-friendly. There will be 8 new zones, with 87 new 4G bikes. The location of the new zones will strengthen the city bike system in terms of access to recreational areas, says Jan Gosiewski, director of the Municipal Transport Authority (polish: ZTM) in Poznan.

During the winter break, every bike that came in for service was thoroughly checked. If it required even a minor repair, the problem was removed by specialists. Additionally, the entire infrastructure was verified.

In upcoming season there will be available:

  • 112 PRM 3rd generation (3G) city bike stations (rented and returned at PRM stations) with almost 1000 bikes,
  • 3 PRM 3G stations with city bikes for children: Malta Ski, Malta Thermal Baths and Śródka Roundabout,
  • 76 bikes equipped with child seats,
  • 833 PRM 4th generation (4G) bikes and additional 30 PRM 4G electric bikes,
  • 178 urban 4G bike parking zones. 80 zones are located near the PRM 3G stations, while the City Centre Zone is an area inside the 1st traffic frame, excluding the Old Market Square.

What future awaits for Poznan Public Bike System?

The agreement with the current operator of the Poznan Public Bike System expires on 31st of December 2022, both for the 3G and 4G systems. However, since last year the Board of Public Transport has been analyzing various options, regarding the possibility of operation of city bike in Poznan from the year 2023.

Options including both 3G station bicycles (which are currently owned by ZTM in Poznan) and stationless 4G bicycles are unde rconsideration. It is difficult to predict, which model will prove to be the more optimal and cheaper solution.

An analysis of the documents submitted by potential system operators, who expressed theiri nterest in preliminary market consultations iscurrently underway. It is centered around the launch, management and maintenance of the urban bicycle system in Poznan from 2023 onwards. The consultations and analysis of collected information will allow to answer a number of questions and will be the basis for further decisions, regarding the near future of the urban bicycle system in the capital of Greater Poland Voivodeship.
