Poznań With The First Quantum Hub In Central And Eastern Europe

The first quantum hub in Central and Eastern Europe will be established in Poznań. Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC), affiliated with the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, joins the IBM Quantum Network and, together with Polish scientists and IBM, will develop quantum computing technologies and their applications.

- The world is changing, and digitization and the Internet are providing to the unprecedented in history acceleration of this process. This also applies to our country. For years, we have been observing the West, trying to reduce the distance that separates us from the local business and scientific solutions. Today we can be not only the best in certain areas, but even the first - says Jacek Jaśkowiak, Mayor of the City of Poznań. - I congratulate the representatives of the government, science, business, and self-government on the cooperation that allowed us to bring about today's event. Because only cooperation, big dreams, vision, and determination can give us an advantage over others. We can be proud that Poznań is once again the place where something begins. And I have no doubts that something great is starting - emphasizes the Mayor.

The projects will be implemented in cooperation with other entities of the global IBM Quantum Network ecosystem.

Quantum computers will allow conducting the most complex, multi-factor, and multi-parameter simulations in complex and dynamic processes in the field of materials engineering and life sciences, including chemistry and biomedicine as well as innovation in the pharmaceutical industry.

For many years, PSNC has been conducting research and development in the field of quantum computing and quantum communication. This decided to entrust this unit with the role of organizing access to a quantum computer for Polish research teams.

A turning point in the process of gaining access to a quantum computer, which has been going on for almost a year, was the arrangements made in November 2021 at the IMPACT conference in Poznań. At that time, the support of Minister Janusz Cieszyński and the Chancellery of the Prime Minister was obtained for this initiative. The PSNC project will be financed with a special-purpose subsidy of the Prime Minister from the funds at the disposal of the Minister of Digitization.

Poznań has been cooperating with PSNC since 1996. At that time, an agreement was signed, which was the first in Poland aimed at the joint creation of an information society. Two years later, the website of the City of Poznań, i.e. the Municipal Multimedia Guide (MIM), was launched. Poznań is cooperating with PSNC on a basis of a Public-Public Partnership agreement, thanks to which they jointly create and develop new multimedia information services. In 2021, PSNC in cooperation with the Digitization and Cybersecurity Office implemented a number of services in the digital transformation process.

On the occasion of signing the contract for launching the hub, Adam Mickiewicz University and Poznań University of Technology signed a letter of intent with IBM on the creation of fields of study related to quantum computer science.

More information about the hub topic can be found on the project website
