In the course of her career, she worked in many institutions, e.g. Universities of Tromsø, Hamburg and Siena, Johns Hopkins University, Michigan State University and Max Planck Institute of Psycholinguistics. She is the founder of information and consulting centre Bilingualism Matters. Her research relates to several related issues bordering with linguistics, experimental psychology and cognitive science. She is one of the top authorities in the field of bilingualism and is particularly interested in the evolution of bilingualism throughout the human life. She is known for her research on adults with a particular talent to learn foreign languages ("near-native" adult second language speakers), decay of the first language in people with highly advanced second language, learning a language as a child in a bilingual mode and the effect of bilingualism on paralinguistic areas. She gained international reputation for her research on language typology, especially on restrictions in variations bordering with lexicon and syntax. In addition, Prof Sorace contributed significantly to the development of experimental methodology in linguistics as she was a pioneer in applying size estimation techniques in assessment elicitation of grammar correctness. Prof Sorace is an enthusiast of distributing the results of research on bilingualism beyond the academic environment.
